Recommended cooking temperatures and time for grilling steak

Grilling Temperatures: Preheat your grill to high heat, typically around 450-500°F (232-260°C) for a good sear.

Cooking Times:

  • for a 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick steak:
    • Rare: 2-3 minutes per side (internal temperature of 125-130°F or 52-55°C).
    • Medium-rare: 3-4 minutes per side (internal temperature of 135-140°F or 57-60°C).
    • Medium: 4-5 minutes per side (internal temperature of 145-155°F or 63-68°C).
    • Well-done: 6-7 minutes per side (internal temperature of 160°F or 71°C and higher).

 

How to smoke on a gas grill

To smoke on a gas grill, begin by preheating it to a low temperature, usually around 225-275°F (107-135°C). Next, prepare your wood chips by either soaking them for 30 minutes or using dry wood chunks. Place these chips in a smoker box or create foil packets with dry chips, positioning them over the lit burners.

With the grill ready, turn off one or more burners, leaving only one or two on. Place your meat or veggies on the grill grates over the unlit burners, close the lid, and carefully monitor the temperature. Adjust the burner with the wood chips as needed to maintain the desired smoking range. As your food smokes and cooks, add more wood chips to ensure a consistent infusion of smoky goodness.

 

How to clean a gas grill

To clean a gas grill, start by turning it off and disconnecting it from the propane tank or gas line. Remove the cooking grates and burner covers, then scrub them with a grill brush to remove debris. Soak them in warm, soapy water for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing them again and rinsing. Clean the burner tubes, grease tray, and the grill's interior with soapy water, then rinse and dry all components. Reassemble the grill, reconnect it, and consider using a grill cover to protect it when not in use.
